Day 1: The Walls before the crowds, then Buza Bar
Book the City Walls for the 8am opening, not mid-morning. The EUR 40 adult peak ticket includes Fort Lovrijenac entry for 3 days, so there’s no need for a second ticket later in the trip. Walk the 1.9 to 2km circuit against the cruise-excursion flow, climbing Minceta Tower , the highest point on the walls, while it’s still nearly empty; by 10am the queue for that one tower alone can run 20 minutes deep.

Free-roaming peacocks, descended from a 19th-century Habsburg collection, live around the botanical garden near the landing.

Midday: inside Fort Imperial at the summit, the Museum of the Croatian War of Independence, small and easy to skip for the view alone, a first-person account of the 1991-92 siege that most cable-car riders never see.
Afternoon: back in the Old Town, the Jesuit Stairs and St Ignatius Church, built in the 1730s in a deliberate echo of Rome’s Spanish Steps, centuries before Game of Thrones used them for a single scene. Free, and quiet outside a tour group’s photo stop.
Evening: dinner in Ploce, the quiet neighborhood just east of the walls, a short walk from Banje Beach without the Stradun markup.
