Beirut Off the Beaten Path: 4 Days
Four days extends the 3-day plan , the Corniche, downtown, the National Museum, Gemmayzeh, and Byblos, adding Jeita Grotto and Harissa’s hilltop shrine, still leaving out Baalbek, the Bekaa, and the south under 2026’s advisory zones. Is it safe to visit Beirut in 2026?
Not by official advisory. The US keeps Lebanon at Level 4, Do Not Travel, and the UK FCDO advises against all travel to Dahieh, the south, the Bekaa and Baalbek, and the north, essential travel only elsewhere. A 2024 ceasefire held until a 2026 re-escalation reopened fighting in March, unresolved by mid-July.

Day 1: The Corniche, downtown, and the mosque beside two cathedrals
Walk the Corniche toward Raouche for Pigeon Rocks, then spend the afternoon in downtown Beirut Souks, Martyrs’ Square, and Nejmeh Square. The blue-domed Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque sits within sight of St. George Maronite Catholic Cathedral and St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, three working houses of worship on one footprint, free to see and inside the least-restricted advisory tier.
Day 2: The National Museum and a Gemmayzeh dinner
The National Museum of Beirut, Tuesday through Sunday, roughly 9:30am to 3pm, closed Monday, verify current hours, holds the Ahiram sarcophagus and its own war story, staff once encased fragile artifacts in concrete when the building sat on the civil war’s Green Line. Evening belongs to Gemmayzeh and Mar Mikhael, rebuilt since the 2020 port blast and thriving again by 2026, for dinner at rooftop bar Iris or longtime fixture Dragonfly.
Day 3: Byblos, older than the alphabet it helped invent
Byblos has been continuously inhabited since roughly 5000 BC, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, and the source of the Ahiram sarcophagus’s inscription. One ticket covers the ancient port ruins and the Crusader-era castle, roughly $8-12, verify the current figure. It’s 30 to 40 minutes north and sits inside Mount Lebanon’s essential-travel-only tier.
Day 4: The cave and the cable car that only run on weekends
Jeita Grotto, roughly 18km northeast of Beirut, is a two-level limestone cave system with an upper-gallery cable car, a mini-train, and a short film, all included in its roughly $15 entry. Pair it with Harissa’s hilltop shrine above Jounieh, reached by teleferique.
Why does Harissa only work on certain days? In 2026, the teleferique’s hours were cut to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only, 11am to 5:30pm, a response to the current situation rather than routine scheduling. Adult fare runs roughly $7.82 one way or $12.29 return. Land this day on a weekend, and confirm the hours haven’t shifted again before you plan around them.
Carry a little Lebanese pound alongside your US dollars for small change; the exchange rate held near 89,550 to the dollar through 2026, not the old 1,507 peg some older guides still quote.
