Holy See Travel Itinerary (3 Days)

Day 1: Vatican City Exploration

Morning

  • Vatican Museums: Start your day early by visiting the Vatican Museums. The museums house an impressive collection of art and artifacts from ancient times to the modern era, including works by Michelangelo, Raphael, and Caravaggio.
  • Sistine Chapel: One of the most famous chapels in Christendom, the Sistine Chapel is renowned for its ceiling painted by Michelangelo, which depicts scenes from the Book of Genesis.

Afternoon

  • St. Peter’s Basilica: The largest Christian church in the world, St. Peter’s Basilica is a must-visit attraction in Vatican City. Its impressive dome was designed by Donato Bramante and later completed by Michelangelo.
  • Explore the Vatican Gardens: If you have time, consider visiting the beautiful Vatican Gardens, which cover an area of approximately 23 hectares.

Evening

  • Enjoy a Traditional Italian Dinner: After a full day of sightseeing, indulge in traditional Italian cuisine at one of the local restaurants. Be sure to try some delicious pasta dishes and wine.
  • Attend a Performance at the Opera House: Depending on the schedule, you might have the opportunity to watch a performance at the Teatro Apollo or another cultural venue.

Day 2: Vatican City and Surroundings

Morning

  • Vatican Library: Visit the Vatican Library, home to an enormous collection of ancient texts, including rare manuscripts. However, please note that the library is not always open to the public.
  • Visit a Local Market: Explore one of Rome’s many markets, such as Campo de’ Fiori or Mercato Centrale, for a taste of local life and some delicious street food.

Afternoon

  • Explore Castel Gandolfo: Consider taking a day trip to Castel Gandolfo, a charming town located just outside Vatican City. The town is famous for its stunning lake views and the summer residence of the Pope.
  • Attend a Papal Audience (Seasonal): If you’re visiting during the summer months, don’t miss the opportunity to attend a papal audience in St. Peter’s Square.

Day 3: Ancient Rome and Vatican City

Morning

  • Roman Colosseum: Visit one of the most iconic landmarks in Rome, the ancient Colosseum. Learn about the history of gladiators and public events held within its walls.
  • Explore the Roman Forum: Explore the ancient city’s heart, the Roman Forum, which features a collection of ancient ruins, temples, and basilicas.

Afternoon

  • Return to Vatican City: Spend your last afternoon in Vatican City visiting any attractions you missed on your first day or revisiting some of your favorite spots.
  • Attend a Traditional Mass: If you’re interested in experiencing the local culture, consider attending a traditional mass at one of the many churches within the city.

  • Visa Requirements: As the Holy See is not a country but an independent sovereign entity inside Rome, Italy, you won’t need a visa to enter Vatican City. However, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date.
  • Language: Italian and Latin are official languages of the Holy See; however, many residents speak English fluently.
  • Currency: The Euro (€) is the official currency used in Vatican City.

Transportation:

  • Getting There: Fly into Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO). From there, take a taxi or use public transportation to reach your accommodation.
  • Within Vatican City: Walking is the best way to explore the city. However, you can also use buses and trams for shorter distances.

Safety:

  • Petty Crime: As with any tourist destination, be mindful of petty crime such as pickpocketing in crowded areas.
