Japan 4-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Tokyo
Places to Visit:
- Tokyo Tower: Get a panoramic view of the city from this iconic tower. Address: 4-2-8 Shibakoen, Minato
- Shibuya Crossing: Experience the busiest intersection in the world and take a walk around Shibuya’s trendy streets.
Things to Know:
- Japan has a unique etiquette system; be mindful of your behavior, especially when visiting temples or shrines.
- Try some traditional Japanese food, such as sushi or ramen.
- Don’t forget to try some green tea ice cream!
Transportation:
- From Narita airport: Take the Keisei Skyliner train (60 minutes, 2000 yen) to Ueno Station and transfer to the JR Yamanote Line.
Visa Requirements:
- As of my last update in April 2023, no visa is required for citizens of the US, Canada, UK, Australia, or many other countries. Check with your local Japanese embassy for up-to-date requirements.
Day 2: Explore Tokyo
Places to Visit:
- Meiji Shrine: Dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken. Address: 1-1 Yoyogi Kamizonocho, Shibuya
- Asakusa: Explore the historic Senso-ji Temple, Nakamise Shopping Street, and enjoy some street food.
Activities:
- Visit the Ghibli Museum (tickets must be purchased in advance), dedicated to Studio Ghibli’s works.
- Relax at a traditional Japanese onsen (hot spring) or public bath house.
Transportation:
- Take the JR Yamanote Line from Shibuya Station to Ueno Station and transfer to the subway for Asakusa.
Things to Know:
- Respect Japan’s rich history, especially when visiting temples or shrines.
- Try some traditional Japanese festivals (matsuri) if you’re lucky!
- Don’t forget your camera for stunning cityscapes!
Day 3: Travel to Kyoto
Transportation:
- From Tokyo Station: Take the bullet train, Shinkansen (2.5 hours, 14,000 yen), to Kyoto Station.
Places to Visit:
- Kiyomizu-dera: A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Japan’s most famous temples.
- Fushimi Inari Shrine: Famous for its thousands of vermillion torii gates forming a tunnel up the mountain.
Day 4: Explore Kyoto
Places to Visit:
- Arashiyama Bamboo Grove: A serene walk through the bamboo forest.
- Gion District: Known for geisha culture, traditional Japanese architecture, and beautiful gardens.
Activities:
- Attend a traditional Japanese tea ceremony (matcha).
- Explore Kyoto’s vibrant street food scene or visit a local market.
Transportation:
- Take the subway from Kyoto Station to various locations around the city.
- Visit the famous Kinkaku-ji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion.
Things to Know:
- Don’t miss the opportunity to see geishas in traditional kimonos!
- Respect Japan’s rich history and cultural heritage.
