Ljubljana Gateway Trip: 5 Day Itinerary
Five days keeps the exact spine of the 4 day version , Ljubljana, Bled, Postojna, Piran, and adds a fifth day in the Julian Alps at Lake Bohinj and the Vintgar Gorge. This is the quieter, less-photographed half of the Bled region, and it earns its own day rather than a rushed add-on. Only have four days? Drop back to the 4 day plan . Want Skocjan and the alpine valleys too? Move up to the 6 day or full 7 day itinerary .
Book these before you go:
- Timed entry for the Vintgar Gorge , sold in hourly slots in 2026, book 48h+ ahead in peak summer
- Entry slots for Postojna Cave , a couple of days ahead in peak summer
- A rental car through discovercars.com , close to essential once Bohinj and the coast are both on the list
- A room near the old town on Booking.com , all five days start from the same base

Day 1: Land, get based, one real taste of the city
Arrive, settle in, and walk the flat, car-free Ljubljanica embankments from Preseren Square past the Triple Bridge to the Central Market. Take the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle if there’s daylight left, then find a riverside table for struklji, the actual national dish. The in-city guide has the deeper version of this day.
Day 2: Lake Bled, the postcard and the crowds
The direct Arriva bus covers the roughly 55 km in about an hour, every 30 minutes from the main bus station, or drive it in 40 to 55 minutes. Go at opening; the pletna boat (€20 adult, €10 child, cash only) and Bled Castle (€19 adult) both get busy fast once the tour buses land mid-morning.
Day 3: Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, bring a layer
Postojna sits about 55 km southwest, roughly an hour by car. The cave alone is €34.90 adult, a constant 10C regardless of the season outside, rent a rain jacket on site for about €6 if needed. Predjama Castle, built into a cliff face, adds €24 alone.
Day 4: Piran, a different country by lunch
Piran is about 120 km southwest, 1h20 to 1h40 by car. The Venetian-Istrian old town has been car free for years; park at the Fornace garage on the edge of town (€1.20/hour, €14.40 daily cap) and walk in. Give it the full afternoon rather than a rushed stopover.
Day 5: Bohinj and Vintgar, the quiet Julian Alps day
Bohinj sits about 30 km past Bled, 1h15 to 1h30 total by car, a glacial lake inside Triglav National Park with real swimming room and none of Bled’s boat-queue theater. The Vogel cable car climbs to 1,535 meters for €28 return adult. On the way, stop at the Vintgar Gorge, wooden walkways through a river gorge for €15 adult, €5 child, now sold in timed hourly slots, book 48 hours ahead in peak summer or you may not get a slot the day you want.
Is Bohinj worth adding if you’ve already done Bled?
Yes, they’re different trips, not duplicates. Bled is the postcard and the crowd; Bohinj is the lake you actually swim in and the cable car view over the Julian Alps without a boat queue. Pair them on the same day if you’re short on time, Vintgar included, since all three sit within about 30 minutes of each other.
Do you need to book the Vintgar Gorge in advance?
Yes, as of 2026 it’s sold in hourly timed-entry slots rather than open walk-up access, and peak-summer slots do fill up. Book at least 48 hours ahead if your visit lands in July or August; shoulder-season demand is lighter but booking ahead still removes the risk.
Do Bled first thing, then loop to Bohinj and Vintgar in the same swing rather than driving back to Ljubljana between them. The three sit close enough together that backtracking wastes a real chunk of the day.
