Mauritania Travel Itinerary: 7 Days of Adventure
Day 1: Arrival in Nouakchott
- Arrive at Nouakchott Airport (NKC)
- Visa requirements: Obtain a visa on arrival (see Visa Requirements below)
- Transfer to hotel and check-in
- Visit the Grand Mosque of Nouakchott, a beautiful example of Islamic architecture
- Spend the evening exploring the local market, where you can try some traditional Mauritanian cuisine
Day 2: Explore Nouakchott
- Start the day with a visit to the National Museum, which showcases the country’s history and culture
- Visit the nearby Beach of the Whalebone Coast, where you can see ancient whalebones and enjoy the scenic views
- In the afternoon, explore the city’s bustling market, where you can buy local handicrafts and try some street food
- Enjoy a traditional Mauritanian dinner in the evening
Day 3: Travel to Chinguetti
- Take a morning bus or taxi to Chinguetti ( approx. 4 hours)
- Visit the ancient Islamic Manuscripts Library, which is home to some of the oldest and rarest Islamic manuscripts in Africa
- Explore the nearby Mosque of Chinguetti, a beautiful example of Islamic architecture
- Spend the evening relaxing in the peaceful desert town
Day 4: Explore the Sahara Desert
- Take a morning camel trek or 4x4 excursion into the Sahara Desert (approx. 1 hour)
- Visit the stunning Aouelid Valley, where you can see ancient fossils and experience the beauty of the desert
- In the afternoon, visit the nearby Oasis of Chinguetti, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings
Day 5: Travel to Ouadâne
- Take a morning bus or taxi to Ouadâne (approx. 6 hours)
- Visit the ancient Mosque of Ouadâne, which is home to some of the oldest Islamic manuscripts in Africa
- Explore the nearby Oasis of Ouadâne, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings
Day 6: Explore the Sahara Desert
- Take a morning camel trek or 4x4 excursion into the Sahara Desert (approx. 1 hour)
- Visit the stunning Dra’a Valley, where you can see ancient fossils and experience the beauty of the desert
- In the afternoon, visit the nearby Oasis of Ouadâne, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings
Day 7: Return to Nouakchott
- Take a morning bus or taxi back to Nouakchott (approx. 6 hours)
- Spend the afternoon shopping for last-minute souvenirs or visiting any last-minute sights
- Depart from Nouakchott Airport in the evening
Things to Know
- Language: Arabic and French are the official languages, but many Mauritanians also speak Berber and other local dialects.
- Climate: Mauritania has a desert climate with very hot temperatures during the day and cold temperatures at night.
- Safety: Mauritania is considered one of the safest countries in Africa, but visitors should still take normal precautions to stay safe.
