Namibia-6-day-itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Windhoek
- Place: Hosea Kutako International Airport
- Transportation: Taxi or shuttle from the airport to your accommodation
- Accommodation: Hotel or lodge in the city center (e.g. Safari Court Hotel)
- Activity: Visit the Namibia Craft Centre and explore the local markets for souvenirs and traditional crafts
- Thing to know: Windhoek is a relatively small city, but it’s a great place to stock up on supplies before heading into the wilderness
- Visa requirements: Citizens of most countries can enter Namibia visa-free for up to 90 days. Check with your embassy or consulate for specific requirements.
- Tips:
- Be prepared for hot and sunny weather in Windhoek, even during the winter months
- Try some local cuisine like braai (barbecue) or traditional Namibian dishes like impala stew
Day 2: Etosha National Park
- Place: Etosha National Park
- Transportation: Drive from Windhoek to Etosha, approximately 3 hours
- Accommodation: Campsite or lodge within the park (e.g. Halali Rest Camp)
- Activity: Game drive through the park in search of wildlife like lions, elephants, and rhinos
- Thing to know: Be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water, as the sun can be intense
- Tips:
- Keep your vehicle locked and valuables secure when parked at the campsite
- Don’t approach or touch wildlife, even if they seem friendly
Day 3: Damaraland
- Place: Twyfelfontein Rock Art site
- Transportation: Drive from Etosha to Damaraland, approximately 4 hours
- Accommodation: Campsite or lodge in the area (e.g. Mowani Mountain Lodge)
- Activity: Visit the ancient rock art at Twyfelfontein and explore the nearby Brandberg Mountains
- Thing to know: Be prepared for rough roads and possible dust storms when driving through the desert landscapes of Damaraland
- Tips:
- Take your time and enjoy the stunning scenery, but be aware that some roads can be challenging for vehicles with low clearance
- Respect local Himba communities and their way of life
Day 4: Skeleton Coast
- Place: Skeleton Coast National Park
- Transportation: Drive from Damaraland to the coast, approximately 2 hours
- Accommodation: Campsite or lodge near the park entrance (e.g. Skeleton Coast Guesthouse)
- Activity: Explore the rugged coastline and visit the infamous shipwreck of the MV Dunedin Star
- Thing to know: The coastal scenery can be breathtaking, but also be prepared for strong winds and rough seas
- Tips:
- Be mindful of your belongings in public areas, as there may be limited security
- Respect local fishing communities and their rights to the coastline
Day 5: Swakopmund
- Place: Swakopmund city center
- Transportation: Drive from Skeleton Coast to Swakopmund, approximately 1 hour
- Accommodation: Hotel or lodge in the city center (e.g. Windhoek Country Club Resort)
- Activity: Explore the German colonial architecture, visit the local markets, and take a stroll along the beach
- Thing to know: Be prepared for cooler temperatures and possible rain showers during the winter months
- Tips:
- Try some of the local seafood at one of the many restaurants in Swakopmund
- Don’t forget to check your belongings carefully before leaving Swakopmund, as there have been reports of theft
Day 6: Return to Windhoek
- Place: Hosea Kutako International Airport (again!)
- Transportation: Drive back from Swakopmund to Windhoek, approximately 4 hours
- Accommodation: Same accommodation in Windhoek as on Day 1
- Activity: Spend some time shopping for last-minute souvenirs or relaxing at your hotel
- Thing to know: Be prepared for the long drive back to Windhoek, and consider breaking it up with a stopover in Swakopmund if you have time
- Tips:
- Take your time on the road and be mindful of local speed limits and traffic laws
- Consider treating yourself to a nice dinner or dessert at one of the many restaurants in Windhoek before departing
