NYC Day Trips Off the Beaten Path: 6 Days
Six days adds the one day trip almost no New York itinerary bothers to schedule: a genuine outdoors day at Bear Mountain, built around hiking instead of another museum queue. Days 1 through 5 run identical to our 5-day version ; this one adds day 6, and our 7-day version extends it further with the one leg that isn’t actually a day trip at all.
Book these before you go:
- Amtrak tickets, Penn Station to Philadelphia : fares roughly double inside two weeks of departure
- Acela tickets, New York to Washington Union Station : book two-plus weeks out for the advance fare tier
- West Point Tours public tour tickets : confirm the schedule and bring a government photo ID
- Hotel near Penn Station on Booking.com : book near your morning departure point
| Day | Day trip | One-way travel time | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Philadelphia | ~1h20-1h40 (Amtrak) | The odd corners beat the Liberty Bell queue |
| 2 | Storm King Art Center | ~1-1.5h (Metro-North) plus a shuttle | 500 acres, 14 miles from the Beacon station |
| 3 | Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown | ~35-53 min (Metro-North) | Mind the corrected geography |
| 4 | West Point | ~1.5-2h (bus) | Bring photo ID, no direct train reaches it |
| 5 | Washington DC | ~2h50-3h (Acela) | Doable, better as an overnight |
| 6 | Catskills/Bear Mountain | ~1.5h (bus) | The one hiking day on this list |
Day 1: Philadelphia, the odd corners
Amtrak’s Northeast Regional and Keystone trains run Penn Station to 30th Street Station roughly every 30 minutes, most trips landing in 1h20-1h40, fares $28-60. Skip the Liberty Bell line for the Mutter Museum’s wall of skulls and Eastern State Penitentiary ’s crumbling cellblocks.
Day 2: Storm King Art Center, the sculpture fields
Storm King sprawls across 500 acres of the Hudson Valley, open 10am-6pm Sunday, Monday and Wednesday through Friday, 10am-8pm Saturday, closed Tuesdays. It sits 14 miles from the Beacon Metro-North station, so budget the rail-plus-shuttle bundle, roughly $35, not a walk.
Day 3: Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, the geography almost everyone gets wrong
Metro-North reaches Tarrytown from Grand Central roughly every 30 minutes, 35-53 minutes each way, fares $9-16. Sunnyside sits in neighboring Irvington, not Sleepy Hollow, and the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze runs at Van Cortlandt Manor, not at Lyndhurst. Historic Hudson Valley’s site confirms which house sits where.
Day 4: West Point, the academy you can actually tour
No direct train reaches West Point. The ShortLine bus runs from Port Authority to Highland Falls, right outside the gate, roughly 1.5-2 hours, $20-30 one-way. Everyone 17 and over needs a government photo ID. West Point Tours runs the public tours from the Visitor Center.
Day 5: Washington DC, the honest overnight
Acela covers Penn Station to Washington Union Station in roughly 2h50-3h, Northeast Regional in 3h15-3h45+, Acela advance fares from around $49. The Smithsonian museums are free, but pick one or two rather than blurring through three; if the schedule bends at all, this is the leg to turn into an overnight.
Day 6: The Catskills and Bear Mountain, the day trip nobody itinerizes
The ShortLine bus runs direct from Port Authority to Bear Mountain Inn in about 1.5 hours, roughly $28 round trip, one weekday departure and two on weekends.
Do you need a car for Bear Mountain?
No, the bus handles the one stop that matters most: Perkins Memorial Tower, the Trailside Museum and Zoo, and genuine hiking trails right off the bus stop. A car only pays off if you want to push further into the wider Catskills for waterfalls and breweries, which is its own separate trip, not a same-day add-on.
Why does almost nobody put Bear Mountain in a New York day-trip itinerary?
Because it doesn’t fit the museum-and-monument template every other list follows. It’s the one day on this route built entirely around being outdoors, which makes it an easy afternoon to skip for another downtown, and exactly why it’s worth keeping in.
For the city itself rather than what lies beyond it, see our New York guide or our 6-day city itinerary . Book the Acela seat before you leave Manhattan, DC fares climb the fastest of anything on this list.
