Offbeat Athens and Greece: 5 Days

Five days adds the mainland’s other direction: land, Cape Sounion, Aegina, Delphi, then a full loop through Nafplio, Mycenae, and Epidaurus. This builds directly on the 4-day itinerary ; the 6-day version adds a second Saronic island on top of this same base.

Day 1: Land and Pick a Base Near the Metro

Land at Eleftherios Venizelos and take Metro Line 3 into Syntagma, about 40 minutes for a 9 EUR one-way airport fare (16 EUR round trip). Check into a Koukaki or Plaka hotel with easy access to a Line 1 or Line 3 stop, since two of the next four days start from a metro platform rather than a taxi rank. Day 2: Cape Sounion

Cape Sounion is about 70km down the coastal road through Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza, 60 to 90 minutes each way. Go for sunset. The Temple of Poseidon on its clifftop only takes 30 to 45 minutes to actually walk around; the rest of the trip is the scenic drive and the wait for the light, which is the entire point. A rental car or an organized sunset tour both work; coastal-road driving in the dark on the way back is the only real downside of doing it yourself.

Day 3: Aegina

The high-speed catamaran covers the crossing in about 40 minutes for 15 to 20 EUR; the slower conventional ferry takes 70 to 75 minutes for 9 to 14.50 EUR, and with sailings running roughly hourly in summer there is little need to book far ahead. Day 4: Delphi

Delphi sits 180km northwest through the Parnassus mountains, a 2.5 to 3 hour drive, or a KTEL bus from the Liosion terminal for about 16.40 EUR one way, running up to 4 times daily. Site and museum admission runs roughly 12 EUR; guided day tours cost 33 to 85 EUR and run 8 to 11 hours door to door. Day 5: Nafplio, Mycenae, and Epidaurus, Then Departure

The Peloponnese loop covers Nafplio, Mycenae, and Epidaurus, roughly 320km round trip, usually run as one long guided day with a stop at the Corinth Canal on the way out. Nafplio itself is about 137km, 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes by car or KTEL bus (13 to 19 EUR one way), a Venetian-era port town with a fortress on a small island in its harbor. Mycenae has the Lion Gate and beehive tholos tombs; Epidaurus has the best-preserved ancient theater in Greece, its acoustics precise enough that a coin dropped center stage carries to the highest row. Should You Do the Peloponnese Loop or Add a Second Saronic Island Instead?

The loop, if this is a one-time trip, since Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Nafplio are mainland history you cannot get from an island day. A second island, likely Hydra, if you already know you are coming back to Greece and would rather trade a long driving day for a slower one; the 6-day itinerary covers exactly that swap.

Is the Corinth Canal Worth a Special Stop?

Not on its own. It is a 20 to 30 minute look at a genuinely dramatic 1893 cut, plus the novelty of a bungee jump on a road bridge, but there is nothing to do there beyond looking and, if you are inclined, jumping. Fold it into the Peloponnese drive rather than building a dedicated trip around it.
