Six Days Is Enough to Drive to a Highway Named for Aliens

Six days adds the one stop that doesn’t fit anywhere shorter: a full-day drive to Rachel, Nevada, on the Extraterrestrial Highway, a road the state legally renamed for aliens in 1996. This builds directly on the 5-day itinerary ; the 7-day version adds a flex day for whatever this one doesn’t get to.

Day 1: Land, Base Camp, Red Rock Canyon

Fly into Harry Reid International, not “McCarran,” which stopped being the name in 2021, where rideshare pickup happens inside the parking garage rather than at the curb; budget the extra walk. Check into a Strip hotel with easy I-15 or US-95 access, since that’s the road nearly every day trip below starts on. Drop bags, then head straight to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, about 17 miles and 20-30 minutes west. Between October 1 and May 31 you need a $2 timed-entry reservation for the 13-mile Scenic Drive, on top of the $15 per-vehicle entrance fee; that reservation isn’t required June through September. Calico Hills and the Turtlehead Peak trailhead both suit an afternoon without demanding serious hiking gear. Time it for the last hour before sunset if you can. Back on the Strip, the Bellagio fountains (free, running every 15-30 minutes) close out the day.

Day 2: Hoover Dam and Lake Mead

Hoover Dam is about 45 minutes southeast, the shortest legitimate day trip near Vegas and still enough to feel like you left the state, since the dam itself straddles the Nevada-Arizona line. Visitor Center admission runs $15 adult, $12 ages 4-16; add the Power Plant Tour for roughly $25-30, or the deeper Guided Dam Tour for about $40. Both tours have limited daily capacity, book ahead. Walking the dam crest itself costs nothing. Lake Mead National Recreation Area sits next door, worth the extra hour for the reservoir’s visibly dropped waterline.

Day 3: Valley of Fire

Valley of Fire is 50-60 minutes northeast, and it’s the one most first-time visitors skip purely because it’s double Red Rock’s drive time, which is exactly why it’s emptier. The red Aztec sandstone formations here read more dramatic than Red Rock’s, and the petroglyph panels near Mouse’s Tank add actual human history to the geology. Entrance runs $15 per vehicle for non-residents ($10 for Nevada residents), $2 per person on foot, bike, or horse. The visitor center keeps 9am-4pm hours, though the park itself stays open sunrise to sunset. Go early, there’s no shade to speak of.

Day 4: Mount Charleston

Mount Charleston, part of the Spring Mountains, is about 45 minutes northwest via Kyle Canyon Road (NV-157), and its peak hits 11,916 feet, the highest ground anywhere near the city. That elevation buys pine forest, alpine air, and a temperature 20-30 degrees cooler than the Strip. Mary Jane Falls and Cathedral Rock both suit an average fitness level; the full Charleston Peak summit route is a serious 17.5-mile, roughly 10.5-hour trek for experienced hikers only. In a good winter, Lee Canyon on the mountain’s north side runs actual ski lifts.

Day 5: Seven Magic Mountains and the Nelson Ghost Town

Seven Magic Mountains, Ugo Rondinone’s stack of neon-painted boulders about 26 miles (roughly 30 minutes) south on I-15 near Jean, is free, unticketed, and takes 20-40 minutes to walk. Its Bureau of Land Management lease runs out in December 2026, so treat this as a see-it-before-it’s-gone stop. From there, continue to the Nelson ghost town and Techatticup Mine via Eldorado Canyon, roughly 40 minutes out: Nevada’s oldest, most productive gold mine, running guided underground tours around $20 adult and $12.50 child at set times (9am, noon, 2pm, minimum four adults), or a $1 self-guided walk past the rusted trucks and film-shoot props.

Day 6: The Extraterrestrial Highway, Then Departure

This is the long one: Rachel, Nevada sits roughly 150 miles and 2.5 hours north via US-93 and NV-375, the two-lane road the state officially renamed the Extraterrestrial Highway in 1996 because it runs closest to the restricted section of the Nellis Air Force Range everyone calls Area 51. Leave early, there’s very little between Vegas and Rachel besides open desert and a gas station or two; fill the tank before you turn onto 375. The Little A’Le’Inn is the actual destination, a cafe-motel-gift shop combination serving an Alien Amber Ale and a Saucer Burger to the UFO enthusiasts and road-trippers who make the drive. Budget the full day for the round trip; this is the one stop here that genuinely doesn’t fit as an afternoon add-on. Head back into Vegas that night for a flight out the next morning from Harry Reid International.

Is a Full Day Really Necessary for a Two-Lane Highway?

Yes. At 2.5 hours each way, the round trip alone eats 5 hours of driving before accounting for time at the Little A’Le’Inn or along the highway itself, and fuel stops thin out fast past the city limits. Anyone trying to bolt this onto another day trip will end up rushing both.

Should I Rent a Car for the Whole Trip or Just Some Days?

Rent for the whole stretch if you’re doing five or six of these day trips; a multi-day rental works out cheaper than day-by-day pickup fees, and having the car parked at your hotel each night removes any morning scramble.
