Tonga Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Nuku’alofa
Morning
- Arrive at Fua’amotu International Airport
- Visa on arrival for most nationalities (see below for details)
- Collect your luggage and exchange some currency to Tongan Pa’anga (TOP)
Afternoon
- Transfer to your hotel in downtown Nuku’alofa
- Visit the Royal Palace, the official residence of the King of Tonga
- Walk along the waterfront and take in the views of the harbor
Day 2: Nuku’alofa Exploration
Morning
- Visit the National Museum of Tonga to learn about the history and culture of the island nation
- Explore the bustling markets, where you can buy local handicrafts and try some traditional foods
Afternoon
- Take a stroll through the picturesque Botanical Gardens
- Visit the Cathedral Church of St. Mary (Tonga’s Anglican cathedral)
Day 3: Vava’u Island
Morning
- Fly from Nuku’alofa to Vava’u Island (approximately 1 hour)
- Check-in at your hotel and take some time to rest
Afternoon
- Visit the beautiful beaches of ‘Utukakau
- Snorkel or dive to see the coral reefs and marine life
Day 4: Whale Watching (seasonal)
- If you’re visiting during whale watching season (July-October), take a guided tour to spot humpback whales in their natural habitat
- Otherwise, visit the Vava’u Museum to learn about the island’s history and culture
Day 5: Ha’apai Islands
Morning
- Fly from Vava’u to Ha’apai Island (approximately 30 minutes)
- Check-in at your hotel and take some time to rest
Afternoon
- Visit the beautiful beaches of Foa
- Take a snorkeling or diving tour to see the coral reefs and marine life
Day 6: Return to Nuku’alofa
Morning
- Fly back from Ha’apai Island to Nuku’alofa (approximately 1 hour)
- Spend some time shopping for souvenirs or visiting any last-minute attractions
Afternoon
- Visit the Fua’amotu Royal Tombs, a historic site that dates back to the 19th century
- Enjoy a farewell dinner at one of Nuku’alofa’s local restaurants
Day 7: Departure
- Spend some time in the morning shopping for last-minute souvenirs or exploring the city
- Depart from Fua’amotu International Airport and head home
Visa Requirements
- Citizens of most countries, including Australia, New Zealand, UK, and US, do not need a visa to enter Tonga.
- Visitors must have a valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity remaining.
Transportation
- The best way to get around is by car or taxi. You can also use the public bus service.
- Rental cars are available from various companies in Nuku’alofa and Vava’u Island.
Other Things to Know
- Tipping is not expected, but it’s appreciated for good service.
- Be respectful of local customs and traditions, especially when visiting churches or other sacred sites.
- Don’t drink tap water; stick to bottled or filtered water instead.
