Warsaw as Your Base: 4 Days, Offbeat Trips
This 4 day plan builds on the 3 day Lodz-plus-Chopin base and adds Torun’s Gothic old town, 2h10 to 2h40 each way, the furthest genuine single-day rail trip on this list. Extend to the 5 day version to add Treblinka’s memorial, or go further for an overnight in Krakow.

Day 1: Land, base up, save the Old Town for later
Fly into WAW Chopin Airport and take the S2 or S3 SKM train (about 20 to 25 minutes, 4.40 PLN) or bus 175 straight into the centre. Base yourself near Warszawa Centralna station rather than deep in the Old Town, since every day trip on this itinerary leaves from there. Flying into Modlin (WMI) instead? The combined bus-plus-train Airport Ticket runs roughly 22.40 PLN and takes about an hour.
Spend the afternoon getting oriented rather than sightseeing hard: a bar mleczny lunch (15 to 40 PLN) and a walk along the Vistula. The city itself, Old Town included, gets its own full treatment in the Warsaw hidden gems guide ; this plan stays focused on what’s reachable by train.
Day 2: Lodz, the day trip with no asterisk
Catch an early PKP Intercity train from Warszawa Centralna to Lodz Fabryczna. The fastest ESPERANTO service takes about 1h10, most others run 1h15 to 1h30, and fares start around 20 PLN booked ahead.
Spend the morning at Manufaktura, a 19th-century textile mill converted into shops and museums, then walk Piotrkowska Street, a mile-plus promenade of cafes and real street art. Finish at OFF Piotrkowska, a converted factory courtyard of small bars and design studios, before the evening train back.
Day 3: Zelazowa Wola, Chopin’s birthplace
There’s no train station at the site itself: a regional train to Sochaczew (40 to 60 minutes) plus a short taxi, or the Chopin Museum’s own seasonal bus (roughly May through September, confirm the current schedule before relying on it). A combined ticket runs around 30 PLN individually, about 80 PLN for a family, and the grounds host outdoor Chopin recitals on summer weekends.
Day 4: Torun, the Gothic old town everyone skips
Torun runs 2h10 to 2h40 from Warszawa Centralna on PKP Intercity , fares tiered from roughly 49 PLN for the earliest Super Promo bookings up to 169 PLN for last-minute seats. Leave on an early train; this is the longest single day on the itinerary.
The UNESCO-listed old town is genuinely Gothic and largely intact, and it’s Copernicus’s birthplace, with a museum in the house where he was born. Torun also invented pierniki, Poland’s spiced gingerbread, and the Living Museum of Gingerbread runs a hands-on baking workshop rather than a static display. If the return train timing feels tight, staying one night here turns a rushed day into a relaxed one.
| Day | Focus | Travel time from Warsaw |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Base up near Centralna, get oriented, no sightseeing pressure | n/a |
| 2 | Lodz: Manufaktura, Piotrkowska Street, OFF Piotrkowska | 1h10 to 1h30 each way |
| 3 | Zelazowa Wola: Chopin’s birthplace and park | About 1 hour, train plus taxi or seasonal bus |
| 4 | Torun: Gothic old town, Copernicus’s birthplace, gingerbread museum | 2h10 to 2h40 each way |
Is Torun better as a day trip or an overnight?
Both work, but the day trip is genuinely tight: 4 to 5 hours each way round trip leaves roughly 6 to 7 hours in the city once you account for a sensible train schedule. An overnight removes the clock-watching and lets you catch the old town lit up at night, which the day-trip version misses entirely.
Does Krakow work as a day trip on this itinerary?
No. Even with 4 days to work with, the fastest Pendolino still takes 2h20 each way and most Intercity trains run 2h45 to 3h, so a same-day round trip still leaves almost no time in the city. Krakow only enters this itinerary family properly in the 6 day and 7 day versions, each with a built-in overnight.
Book the Torun train as early as the 30-day Super Promo window opens if the date is fixed. Waiting until the week before routinely doubles or triples the fare for the exact same seat.
