EPCOT Was Supposed to Be a City

Walt Disney’s original EPCOT was not a theme park. It stood for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, and Disney genuinely intended it to be a functioning city of 20,000 residents, with a central commercial district, outer residential neighbourhoods, a 1,000-acre office park for technology companies, and a PeopleMover transit system running on a separate elevated track from automobiles. His specific idea was that the city would never be “finished”: when a better refrigerator design was developed in the R&D district, every household in EPCOT would receive it first. The city would be a permanent living test bed.

Disney died in 1966, and the concept was shelved. When EPCOT Center opened in 1982, it had become a theme park organised around futurism and international culture rather than an actual place to live. The monorail and the underground utilidor corridor system are the most obvious physical remnants of what Disney’s engineers had designed for a real city.

That backstory matters because EPCOT has always been the Disney park that most needs context to appreciate. Its identity is less coherent than the Magic Kingdom, and the 2020s renovation programme, officially rebranding Future World as four thematic neighbourhoods, has made it feel both more modern and harder to navigate without a map.

The Park in 2026

The major news for EPCOT in 2025 and 2026 is that the park’s lineup has changed substantially.

Test Track returned in 2025 as version 3.0, with the create-your-own-car segment removed and the entire experience rebuilt around the history and future of vehicles. The queue features projection mapping. Most enthusiasts consider it an improvement.

Soarin’ debuted a new film on 26 May 2026 as Soarin’ Across America, replacing the previous version that mixed footage of California with other international locations.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure reopened in November 2025 with updated 2D visuals replacing the original 3D setup. The ride itself, a trackless dark ride shrunk to mouse-scale through the Gusteau restaurant, remains one of the park’s best.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is one of the longest indoor roller coasters ever built and the attraction that generates the longest waits. It uses vehicles that rotate 360 degrees and includes a backward launch sequence. Virtual queues or Lightning Lane individual purchase are the only realistic ways to ride without a two-plus hour standby; the virtual queue releases at 7:00 am and sells out immediately.

Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana, is an outdoor walk-through experience in the World Nature area where water features respond to touch and movement. It is atmospheric rather than thrilling, good for a late afternoon stroll.

World Showcase

The World Showcase is the part of EPCOT that has changed least since 1982, and in many ways it is the park’s most distinctive feature. Eleven national pavilions line the shore of World Showcase Lagoon, each staffed partly by citizens of the country it represents, with architecture, food, retail, and entertainment calibrated to a particular vision of national character.

The pavilions are openly idealised and selective, the Canada pavilion is not a comprehensive account of Canada, but the staffing arrangement gives the experience a grounding in real people that most theme parks lack. Talking to the staff in each pavilion is one of the underrated pleasures of a slow circuit of the lagoon.

Pavilions to prioritise: Japan has the best retail selection of any pavilion, with authentic merchandise that is not easily found elsewhere in Florida. Morocco has the most architecturally impressive reproduction, based on detailed studies of Fes and Marrakech. The France pavilion shows a short film on French landscapes that dates from the 1980s but remains charming.

Where to Eat

EPCOT has the best restaurant selection in Walt Disney World, and the table service options in World Showcase are genuinely good rather than merely acceptable for a theme park.

Le Cellier Steakhouse in the Canada Pavilion has been a top-performing EPCOT restaurant for decades. The Canadian cheddar cheese soup has its own reputation. Reservations open 60 days ahead and are usually gone within hours.

Via Napoli in the Italy Pavilion uses wood-burning ovens to produce proper Neapolitan-style pizzas, with toppings imported from Italy. The pizza is widely considered the best in Walt Disney World.

Takumi-Tei in the Japan Pavilion offers omakase multi-course tasting menus: omnivore option at 250 dollars per person, plant-based at 150 dollars. For a special-occasion dinner inside the park this is the most serious culinary option available.

Biergarten in the Germany Pavilion operates communal tables and live oompah entertainment at lunch and dinner. The atmosphere makes it worth the visit even if the food is relatively straightforward.

Rose and Crown in the United Kingdom Pavilion has a lagoon-side terrace with the best sightline for the evening Harmonious fireworks show. If you want a table outside for fireworks, book months ahead or plan to eat at the bar.

Festivals

EPCOT runs four annual festivals that effectively extend the food and culture offerings of World Showcase: Festival of the Arts (January and February), International Flower and Garden Festival (spring), International Food and Wine Festival (autumn), and Festival of the Holidays (November and December). The Food and Wine Festival in particular adds dozens of food and drink kiosks around World Showcase with region-specific small plates and often features live music on weekend evenings.

The festivals are free to enter with regular park admission. The food kiosks charge separately per item, and the cost adds up quickly, but a circuit of the kiosks during Food and Wine constitutes a genuinely interesting eating experience.

Where to Stay

Disney’s Beach Club Resort and Disney’s BoardWalk Inn are the two properties within walking distance of EPCOT’s International Gateway entrance, a back entrance into World Showcase between the France and United Kingdom pavilions. This access point is more useful than it sounds: it means hotel guests can walk out of the park in the evening without crossing the full length of the park, and return for rope drop without the monorail or bus queue.

Both hotels are on the expensive end of the Walt Disney World property portfolio. Off-site hotels in the Disney Springs corridor are substantially cheaper and connect to the parks via Disney’s free bus service, adding 20 to 30 minutes of travel time each way.

Practical Details

Park reservations are required in addition to admission tickets and are made through the My Disney Experience app. Lightning Lane Multi Pass covers most EPCOT attractions for a daily per-person fee; Guardians of the Galaxy requires a separate individual Lightning Lane purchase or virtual queue.

Table service reservations open exactly 60 days before the dining date at 6:00 am Eastern Time. Le Cellier, Takumi-Tei, and the character dining options at the Garden Grill typically fill within minutes of opening. Set a reminder.

Orlando International Airport is roughly 30 minutes from Walt Disney World by car or hired transfer. Disney’s Magical Express shuttle service ended in 2022; paid private transfers, rideshare services, and rental cars are the current options. The Brightline train from Miami and Fort Lauderdale now connects to Orlando, though a separate transfer from the Orlando station to the resort is needed.

EPCOT is the largest of the four Walt Disney World parks by walking area. A full circuit of World Showcase Lagoon is approximately two miles. In July and August, midday temperatures consistently exceed 95 degrees Fahrenheit with high humidity. Morning arrival, a midday break at your hotel, and a return for the evening fireworks is a more sustainable approach than attempting to stay in the park all day.
