Salar De Uyuni
NASA uses the Salar de Uyuni to calibrate the altimeters on Earth observation satellites. The salt flat at 3,656 metres above sea level is so large (10,582 square kilometres) and so flat (total elevation variation across the entire surface is less than one metre) that it is the most reliable reference point on Earth for measuring altitude from space. That fact tends to land differently than the standard superlatives about its size, because it makes concrete what “flat” actually means at this scale.
The Salar formed through the evaporation of a prehistoric lake, Paleo Lake Tauca, which covered much of the Bolivian altiplano and reached a maximum depth of 140 metres roughly 15,000 years ago. What remains is an 8-metre-thick crust of salt over brine rich in sodium, potassium, magnesium, and lithium. The lithium concentration in the brine beneath the surface is significant enough that Bolivia holds roughly 22 percent of the world’s known lithium reserves, most of it under and around the Salar. Evaporation ponds for lithium extraction are visible at the southern end of the flat; this is worth knowing before you visit because the industrial operation is a real and growing presence, not hidden from the tourist areas but not often mentioned in tour operator descriptions either.
Dry season versus wet season
Most travel guides describe the dry season (May to November) as the best time to visit because the surface is stable, white, and navigable. This is accurate. The wet season (December through April) brings an inch or two of standing water across the surface, which creates the famous mirror reflections of the sky that appear in most Salar photography. Both versions of the Salar are genuinely extraordinary; they are simply different experiences.
Peak wet-season conditions for the mirror effect run January through early March. Rain comes in afternoon thunderstorms rather than continuously, so mornings are often clear and the reflection is strongest in still air around sunrise. The risk: heavy rainfall can flood the surface enough to make vehicle access dangerous, and tours are sometimes cancelled or rerouted mid-itinerary. If you are visiting specifically for the reflection photographs, build in flexibility and do not book non-refundable flights around a single specific wet-season date.
Peak dry season (June to August) brings the most visitors, the coldest overnight temperatures (below freezing at high altitude), and the sharpest geometric salt crust patterns. The famous perspective-trick photographs (holding a miniature person on someone’s outstretched hand, etc.) work best in dry season when the surface is clean and white and the horizon is unambiguous.
Getting there
Uyuni town is the base for all salt flat visits. The town is on the southern altiplano at 3,669 metres. Getting there involves either flying (the Joya Andina Airport has services from La Paz and Santa Cruz on Boliviana de Aviacion; the taxi from the airport to town costs around 20 BOB), taking a long overnight bus from La Paz (10 to 12 hours), or crossing from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, a border crossing that ascends 1,200 metres over a single day. That last option catches people off guard with altitude sickness who felt fine at San Pedro (2,400 metres) and struggle at Uyuni (3,669 metres).
Acclimatisation is not optional
At 3,656 to 5,000 metres across the salt flat and the Southwest Circuit (which extends into Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve), you are breathing approximately 60 percent of the oxygen available at sea level. Symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, nausea, dizziness, and sleep disruption. The standard recommendation is 2 to 3 days of acclimatisation in La Paz (3,600 metres) or Potosi (4,090 metres) before attempting the Salar circuit. Arriving from sea level and joining a tour the next day is the decision that ruins the most salt flat trips.
Tours and what they include
Almost all visits are done via 4WD tour, because public transport does not serve the Salar. Day tours from Uyuni cost around $50 to $75 per person and cover the train cemetery, Colchani village, the main salt flat, Isla Incahuasi (cactus island), and the sunset at the flat. Three-day tours extending into the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve cost $150 to $280 per person all-inclusive and add the coloured lagoons (Laguna Colorada, Laguna Verde), the Siloli Desert with the famous rock “Arbol de Piedra”, and the Sol de Manana geysers at 4,850 metres. The three-day circuit is considered the more complete experience, though the third day involves early starts (the geysers are visited at dawn) at extreme altitude.
Cash is essential beyond Uyuni town. There are no functioning ATMs on the circuit; entry to Isla Incahuasi costs 30 bolivianos and bathroom facilities at stops cost 5 bolivianos. Bring more bolivianos than you think you need.
Book tours at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead in June through August and in January through February. In these peak windows, agencies in Uyuni town run full 4WDs most days and quality variation between operators matters: the difference between a well-maintained vehicle with a competent driver and a sketchy one becomes acute when you are crossing salt flats at altitude and three hours from the nearest town.
The train cemetery
The Train Cemetery (Cementerio de Trenes) on the outskirts of Uyuni, 3 km from the town centre, is where British-built steam locomotives and rail cars were abandoned from the early 20th century when the Bolivian mining industry declined. The trains have been rusting in the desert altitude since the 1940s and are now so weathered that their structural condition is genuinely unpredictable; most tours let visitors climb on them despite this. It makes for striking photographs and is a 20-minute stop on most day tours, not a destination in itself.
Where to stay
Uyuni town has a range of budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels concentrated on the streets near the central plaza. Quality is functional rather than exceptional; most visitors spend the minimum necessary time there. The salt hotels built partly from compressed salt blocks on the edge of the flat (Luna Salada, Palacio de Sal) offer a more distinctive experience but cost significantly more. For the three-day circuit, accommodation is in basic hostels in remote villages on the route; the quality varies and the circuit is designed around the driving schedule rather than accommodation comfort.
Flamingos and wildlife
Three species of flamingo breed on the salt flat and surrounding lagoons from November onward. The Eduardo Avaroa Reserve has the most reliable flamingo sightings; Laguna Colorada in particular turns red-pink from algae and hosts large flamingo colonies. Vicunas (wild camelids related to llamas) are common on the altiplano sections of the tour.
The single most important practical fact about visiting Salar de Uyuni: your camera, phone, and any other battery-powered equipment will drain faster than expected at high altitude in cold temperatures. A battery that reads 40 percent at sunrise may be dead by 9am. Bring extra batteries, keep them warm in an inner jacket pocket overnight, and do not assume your phone’s sunrise photography plans will survive the cold if you leave the device in your tent or vehicle.
