Day Trips in Hegra
Tucked away in southern Jordan, Hegra (also known as Hegra or Al Hijr) is an ancient archaeological site that boasts some of the most impressive Nabataean ruins outside of Petra. While it’s not as crowded as its more famous counterpart, Hegra offers a unique and immersive experience for history buffs and adventure-seekers alike.
Getting There
Hegra is located about 15 km southeast of Aqaba, Jordan’s southernmost city. The best way to get there is by renting a car or taking a taxi from Aqaba (approximate cost: 10-15 JOD). If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also take a bus from Aqaba, but be prepared for a bumpy ride.
Must-See Attractions
- The Temple of Atargatis: Dedicated to the Nabataean goddess Atargatis, this magnificent temple is one of Hegra’s crown jewels. Be sure to admire its intricate carvings and ornate facade.
- The Royal Tombs: A series of six elaborate tombs carved into the mountainside, each one showcasing the craftsmanship and artistry of the Nabataeans.
- The Theatre and Amphitheatre: Built into the sides of two hills, these ancient structures offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Tips and Tricks
- Best Time to Visit: Avoid visiting Hegra during the peak summer months (June-August) as the sun can be scorching hot. Instead, plan your visit for spring or autumn when the weather is milder.
- Water and Snacks: Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and snacks with you, as services are limited in the area.
- Respect the Site: Hegra is an archaeological site, so be sure to respect the rules and regulations in place to preserve this incredible piece of history.
Accommodation
While there aren’t any hotels or resorts directly adjacent to Hegra, you can find a range of accommodations in Aqaba. Consider staying overnight in the city before heading out to the site early the next morning.
