Manama Festivals: 5 Odd Occasions

Travel advisory: Bahrain is currently caught up in the active 2026 regional conflict involving Iran, and Manama itself has taken a direct hit, including a drone strike on a hotel downtown. This page is written for whenever it’s safe to plan around a calendar again. Check your government’s current travel advisory before booking anything.
1. The Bahrain Grand Prix, not in Bahrain this year
The Sakhir circuit hosted the Middle East’s first Formula 1 race in 2004, but the 2026 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix has been relocated to Sepang, Malaysia because of the war. Don’t plan a Manama trip around watching F1 here in 2026; the usual March hotel-price spike tied to race weekend doesn’t apply this year either.
2. Spring of Culture
An arts festival roughly February to March (verify 2026 dates before planning around it), plus a reported Bahrain Food Festival on the calendar in some years (verify). Together they’re the closest thing the city has to an organized cultural season.
3. Ramadan and Eid
Ramadan 2026 falls roughly from mid-February to mid-March (verify exact dates). Daytime eating, drinking and smoking in public are restricted for everyone, not just Muslims, hours shift at restaurants and shops, and the nights get noticeably livelier once the fast breaks.
4. National Day, 16 to 17 December
Marks Bahrain’s 1971 independence, with parades and public celebrations across the city; a straightforward, upbeat public holiday.
5. Ashura
A solemn Shia religious observance, mourning processions and majalis rather than a festival. It fell around 25 June in 2026 and moves earlier each year on the lunar calendar (roughly mid-June 2027). Treat it the way you’d treat any solemn memorial observance: no festival framing, no casual photography of processions, and dress and behave respectfully if you’re present for it.
If your dates land during Spring of Culture, a Bahrain cultural tour can bundle a few venues in one outing, and a hotel is worth locking in early around National Day. (Check the current official travel advisory before booking either.)
To slot these dates into a plan, see the 3-day Manama itinerary or the wider Manama guide . For the official event calendar, check VisitBahrain directly rather than relying on any single source, including this one, for exact 2026 dates.
If you can only build a trip around one date on this list, make it something other than Ashura, which is for locals to observe, not for visitors to schedule a trip around.
