Mandalay Festivals: 4 Real Events

Read this first: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup, with an ongoing civil war since then, most governments currently advise against travel, check your own government’s current advisory before planning a trip around any event below. Sagaing, across the river from Mandalay, is one of the more active conflict areas in the country. A magnitude 7.7 earthquake also hit the Sagaing-Mandalay area on 28 March 2025, and several festival sites took real damage, so treat every date and detail below as needing a current-year check, not a settled calendar entry. Favour small independent operators over anything junta-linked if you do travel. This describes Mandalay’s festival calendar for if and when it’s safe to visit, not a “go now” event guide.
Under military rule, an ongoing civil war, and post-quake displacement and reconstruction, festivals in and around Mandalay may run reduced, relocated, or not at all in any given year, verify current-year status before building a trip around one.
| Festival | Roughly when | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Thingyan (water festival) | Mid-April | Mandalay’s own Myoma Float tradition |
| Thadingyut (Festival of Lights) | September or October | End of Buddhist Lent |
| Mahamuni Pagoda Festival | Timing unconfirmed | Mahamuni took confirmed quake damage |
| Taungbyone Nat Festival | Around August | North of Mandalay, in Madaya township |
Four real festivals worth knowing about:
- Thingyan (Burmese New Year water festival), mid-April. Myanmar’s biggest festival, several days of citywide water-throwing to wash away the old year, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2024. Mandalay has its own version of the “Myoma Float” tradition at City Hall, along with yein dance troupes performing through the celebrations.
- Thadingyut (Festival of Lights), September or October. Marks the end of Buddhist Lent, with candles and lights across the city and at pagodas, a quieter, more contemplative counterpart to Thingyan’s chaos.
- The Mahamuni Pagoda Festival, timing and scale unconfirmed. An annual celebration at Mandalay’s most revered pagoda. Mahamuni took confirmed structural damage in the 2025 earthquake, so both the festival’s current scale and its exact timing need a fresh check rather than an assumption based on pre-2025 accounts.
- Taungbyone Nat Festival, around August, north of Mandalay in Madaya township. One of Myanmar’s most famous nat (spirit) festivals, with nat kadaw spirit mediums, a role often held by trans women since the 1980s, dancing in an ecstatic, syncretic Buddhist-animist tradition. It’s a vivid, genuinely unusual event and worth covering with respect rather than as a spectacle, this is a living religious practice for the people who take part in it.
None of these come with a reliable current calendar we’d stand behind for 2026, dates shift year to year even in ordinary times, and this isn’t an ordinary time. Ask locally or check with a Myanmar-focused tour operator closer to your travel dates rather than trusting any single online source, including this page.
For the everyday version of Mandalay culture that doesn’t depend on hitting a specific date, our things to do guide covers the gold-leaf workshops and city sights, and our hidden gems page covers tea-shop culture and the crafts scene. If you’re timing a trip around Thingyan or Thadingyut, our main guide has the broader when-to-go picture alongside the advisory.
A Mandalay festival and culture tour search can connect you with a local operator who’ll know current-year timing, check the current official travel advisory before booking, and favour local independent operators. For somewhere to stay if you do time a visit around an event, a Mandalay hotel search is a starting point.
Check the US State Department Myanmar advisory and the UK FCDO Myanmar travel advice before any of this becomes a real plan.
