Generic China-city listicles love inventing a “Nanjing Lantern Festival” or a “Nanjing International Flower Festival” that doesn’t correspond to anything actually scheduled in the city. Nanjing’s real calendar runs on flower seasons tied to specific sites, one solemn national memorial day, and two national holidays worth avoiding rather than attending. Six dates worth building a trip around, or away from.
1. Plum Blossom Season at Meihua Shan, Roughly Late February Into March
Meihua Shan (Plum Blossom Hill) sits just south of Ming Xiaoling on Purple Mountain, actually Sun Quan’s tomb mound predating the Ming tomb by a millennium, and its roughly 13,000 plum trees peak in a window running from late February into mid-March. Exact 2026 peak dates weren’t confirmed in research for this piece, so treat the window as a planning estimate and check closer to your trip.
2. Cherry Blossom Season at Jiming Temple and Xuanwu Lake, Roughly Late March
Jiming Temple’s pink-wall approach lane and the adjoining Ming wall stretch, plus Xuanwu Lake’s Ying Isle, are the city’s known cherry blossom draws, roughly late March, though the exact 2026 bloom window wasn’t pinned down in research either. Prices at Jiming Temple reportedly rise during peak season, so budget a little extra if you’re timing a visit around this.
3. Qixia Mountain’s Autumn Maples, Late November Into Early December
Qixia Mountain’s crimson maple foliage peaks in late autumn, and the clearest evidence of how seriously locals take the window is the ticket price itself, ¥25 normally, rising to ¥40 during peak maple season. Exact peak weeks shift year to year, so if the leaves are the whole reason for your trip, build in flexibility rather than locking a date months out.
4. Nanjing Massacre Victims Memorial Day, December 13
December 13 marks China’s national day of mourning for the estimated 300,000 civilians and unarmed soldiers killed in the 1937-38 Nanjing Massacre, with an annual national memorial ceremony held since 2014. This isn’t a festival and shouldn’t be treated as one. If your dates land on or near it, expect heightened solemnity and heavier local visitation at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall , and plan any visit there with quiet, restrained conduct regardless of the date.
5. Tomb-Sweeping Day (Qingming), Early April
Qingming brings nationwide ancestor-honoring visitation, and in Nanjing specifically it adds extra solemnity and crowds at both the Massacre Memorial and the Aviation Martyrs’ Cemetery on Purple Mountain’s northern slope, where roughly 4,296 aviation personnel from the Second Sino-Japanese War and beyond are commemorated. Expect a heavier, more local crowd at both sites this week than on an ordinary day.
6. Golden Week and Labor Day, the Two to Avoid
National Day Golden Week runs October 1-7, 2026, and Labor Day runs May 1-5, 2026. Both bring heavy domestic travel volume and inflated hotel rates nationwide, Nanjing included, and Golden Week in particular overlaps awkwardly with Qixia’s early autumn color. If flexible, shift a trip a week or two either side of both windows.
| Date | Roughly when | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Plum blossom, Meihua Shan | Late Feb-March | Purple Mountain photo season |
| Cherry blossom, Jiming Temple/Xuanwu Lake | Late March | City-wall and lake photo season |
| Qixia maples | Late Nov-early Dec | Ticket price jumps ¥25 to ¥40 |
| Massacre Victims Memorial Day | December 13 | Solemn, heavier visitation at the Memorial |
| Qingming (Tomb-Sweeping Day) | Early April | Crowds at the Memorial, Aviation Martyrs’ Cemetery |
| Golden Week / Labor Day | Oct 1-7, May 1-5 | Avoid: crowds and inflated rates nationwide |
If you’re timing a trip around Qixia’s maples or the Purple Mountain blossoms, check hotel availability in Nanjing early, since both windows draw domestic crowds on top of any holiday overlap. Our travel tips post covers the visa and payment basics worth sorting before any of these dates.
Whatever week you land on, check December 13 and early April against your dates before booking the Memorial into your plan. Both call for a quieter, more deliberate visit than the rest of the city needs.
