Romantic Getaways Afar Region
Water Activities in Afar Region
The Afar Region, a desert region in northeastern Ethiopia, may seem like an unlikely destination for water activities. However, its unique landscape offers opportunities for exploring the region’s water sources.
Saltwater Lakes and Hot Springs
- Lake Afrera: A saltwater lake with hot springs, located about 60 km from Asalale town. The lake’s water temperature varies between 35°C to 40°C (95°F to 104°F) throughout the year.
- Lake Shala: Another saline lake in the region, known for its high water salinity.
Swimming and Water Sports
No swimming or water sports are recommended due to the harsh desert environment and limited access to potable water sources.
Fishing
Fishing is possible in some of the Afar Region’s lakes and rivers. However, it requires a permit from the Ethiopian Fisheries Development Authority (EFDA) and knowledge of the local fishing regulations.
Safety Tips
- Be prepared for extreme heat and dust storms.
- Bring sufficient water and food supplies to sustain you throughout your stay.
- Respect the local communities and their traditions.
- Be aware of the potential health risks associated with swimming in untreated water sources.
Note: The Afar Region is a remote area, and medical facilities are scarce. Plan accordingly and take necessary precautions before engaging in any water activities.
