Water Activities in Thimphu
Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about water activities. However, there are a few options for those interested in splashing around:
Fishing
Fishing is allowed in some rivers and streams outside of Thimphu, but you’ll need to obtain a permit from the Department of Geology and Mines.
- Best time: Spring and autumn months when water levels are relatively low.
- Location: Outside of Thimphu city limits (no water)
Hot Springs
Thimphu has several hot springs that can be visited for relaxation purposes. However, these are not ideal for swimming laps.
- Best time: Anytime, as the temperature remains relatively consistent throughout the year.

Rafting
There is no major river or body of water near Thimphu that would be suitable for rafting. The Chuu River and nearby rivers are available for fishing, but they might not provide the excitement of a whitewater experience.
- Best time: N/A (no water)
Swimming
Swimming is not recommended in any body of water within Thimphu city due to pollution concerns and lack of proper facilities.
