Read this before you book a driver: Jammu & Kashmir is a security-sensitive, disputed region. The 22 April 2025 attack near Pahalgam, and the India-Pakistan military escalation that followed, are why the US State Department and UK FCDO currently advise against travel to J&K, with the FCDO naming Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg specifically. Check your government’s current advisory before booking anything below, and travel with a registered operator. Gulmarg and Sonamarg are both reported open with stepped-up security since 2025; Pahalgam needs a more careful look, covered honestly below.
Five real day trips out of Srinagar, roughly closest to furthest.
1. Gulmarg, for the Gondola
About 50km, 1.5-2 hours from Srinagar, at roughly 2,650m. The Gulmarg Gondola is one of the world’s highest cable cars: Phase 1, Gulmarg to Kongdori, runs about ₹740-810; Phase 2, Kongdori to Apharwat (about 3,980m), another ₹920-1,010; combined roughly ₹1,800. Winter turns it into a genuine ski destination; summer means meadows and golf. It’s reported fully open with a heavier security presence since 2025.
2. Pahalgam, With an Honest Caveat
About 90km, 2.5-3 hours from Srinagar, at roughly 2,740m, covering the Lidder valley and the Betaab and Aru valleys. Pahalgam is also where the 22 April 2025 attack happened, specifically at Baisaran meadow nearby, not in the town center itself. Treat “Pahalgam town is open” and “Baisaran is reopened” as two separate questions, and verify both locally or with your operator before building a day around either. This isn’t a reason to erase Pahalgam from a Kashmir trip, but it is a reason to check current status rather than assume.
3. Sonamarg, the “Meadow of Gold”
About 80km, 2.5 hours from Srinagar, at roughly 2,800m. Sonamarg is the gateway toward Zojila Pass and Ladakh, and toward the Amarnath pilgrimage trek, with Thajiwas Glacier as the main day-trip draw. Reported open with the same stepped-up security as Gulmarg.
4. Yusmarg and Doodhpathri
Two quieter alpine meadows further off the main day-trip circuit than Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg, worth it if you’ve already done the big three and want somewhere with fewer other tourists.
5. Aharbal Falls
A waterfall and valley day trip, again quieter than the marquee three, and a reasonable pairing with Yusmarg or Doodhpathri if you’re extending a trip past the standard week.
Quick Comparison
| Day trip | Distance/time | Rough cost (INR) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gulmarg | ~50km / 1.5-2h | ~₹1,800 gondola combined | Reported fully open, heavier security |
| Pahalgam | ~90km / 2.5-3h | Varies | Verify Baisaran status separately from town |
| Sonamarg | ~80km / 2.5h | Varies | Reported open, Zojila/Ladakh gateway |
| Yusmarg / Doodhpathri | Further out | Varies | Quieter alternative to the big three |
| Aharbal Falls | Further out | Varies | Waterfall, pair with Yusmarg |
Uber Intercity and Ola both operate out of Srinagar to these destinations, alongside the usual union taxis, so booking a driver ahead isn’t the only option. Whichever you pick, check your government’s current advisory the morning you go, not just when you booked, since checkpoints and access can shift with little notice. For a gondola day tour booked ahead of arrival, search Gulmarg tours on GetYourGuide .
To see how these day trips slot around the city itself, see the Srinagar guide and the longer 5-day Srinagar itinerary , which builds Gulmarg and Sonamarg around a Dal Lake base.
If you only have one day to spare, make it Gulmarg. It’s the day trip with the clearest current status and the single most striking thing to actually do once you’re there.
