Where to Stay in Joburg: Sandton First

Before you book: where you stay in Johannesburg matters more than in most cities, because it decides how much you rely on cars versus walking. Choose a neighborhood with Gautrain access if you can, use Uber or Bolt for everything after dark, keep valuables away from windows, and don’t wander Hillbrow or the inner-city streets solo, guided tours only. Check your own government’s current travel advisory before you lock in dates.
Where you base yourself in Joburg shapes the whole trip more than which sights you pick.
Neighborhood Comparison
| Area | Vibe | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sandton | Upscale, malls, Gautrain hub | First-timers, safety-first travelers |
| Rosebank | Art, markets, central, Gautrain | A quieter version of Sandton with more culture |
| Melville / Maboneng | Bohemian, cafes, nightlife | Travelers wanting more street life, more caution after dark |
| Near OR Tambo | Airport hotels | Early flights or a one-night layover |
Sandton is the low-risk default: it’s home to Nelson Mandela Square, most of the city’s upscale dining, and the main Gautrain station, so you can reach OR Tambo or Pretoria without touching a road at night. Mid-range Sandton stays run roughly R2,500-3,500 a night (verify), which fits comfortably into the city’s overall daily budget of about R3,000-3,500 per person.
Rosebank sits one Gautrain stop from Sandton, trades a bit of polish for more galleries and markets, and works well if you want to walk to dinner rather than always calling a car.
Melville and Maboneng are the bohemian choice, good food, good street art, more character, but they demand more caution once the sun goes down; book transport rather than walking between venues.
Near OR Tambo makes sense only for an early departure or a short overnight before a safari transfer.
Compare Sandton hotels or browse Rosebank options before you land; for Soweto or the inner city, book a guided tour rather than staying there, and use trusted transport to get in and out.
Is it worth paying more to stay in Sandton?
For a first Johannesburg trip, yes. The premium buys Gautrain access, well-lit streets, and a shorter, safer run to OR Tambo, which matters more here than in most cities on a typical itinerary.
Pair this with our Johannesburg guide or a full day-by-day itinerary to plan the rest of the trip around your base.
One concrete tip: book anything in Melville or Maboneng with late checkout in mind, both neighborhoods are better explored in daylight, so plan your last morning there, not your last night.
