Iceland Off the Beaten Path: 4 Day Itinerary
Four days keeps the same spine as our 3 day plan , Golden Circle, Reykjanes, South Coast, and adds the one peninsula most rushed itineraries drop first: Snaefellsnes, “Iceland in miniature,” better as a fourth day than squeezed into an already full week. Need more room? The 5 day version adds a proper northern lights attempt.
| Day | Focus | Distance / Drive Time |

Book these before you go
- Blue Lagoon tickets, pre-booked only, no walk-up entry at any tier: book Blue Lagoon tickets
- A Golden Circle tour if self-driving the loop doesn’t appeal: book Golden Circle tour
- A guided South Coast tour, 11-12 hours behind the wheel is real fatigue: book South Coast tour
- A rental car for the days you self-drive: compare cars in Reykjavik
Day 1: Golden Circle plus the pool most tours skip
Thingvellir first, 45km and an hour out, the rift valley where the tectonic plates visibly pull apart. Geysir follows another hour on, Strokkur firing every 5-10 minutes, then Gullfoss ten minutes past that. Route back through Fludir for the Secret Lagoon , Iceland’s oldest pool, built in 1891, from about €24 (roughly $26), rather than straight down Route 1. The full loop runs 6-8 hours with stops, paved throughout.
Day 2: Reykjanes, and picking your lagoon
The Blue Lagoon sits on the Reykjanes Peninsula near Grindavik, 50km and 40 minutes out, only 23km and 20 minutes from Keflavik. Comfort tickets run from ISK 11,990 (~$96) on the official site , pre-booked only. Prefer no peninsula drive at all? Sky Lagoon in Kopavogur runs roughly $100-150, 10-15 minutes from downtown. Check safetravel.is that morning; Reykjanes has erupted in episodes since 2023, most recently the ninth Sundhnukur eruption, ended 5 August 2025, with another considered likely.
Day 3: South Coast to Reynisfjara
Leave by 7am. Seljalandsfoss is first, 116km and 90 minutes out, the one fall you can walk behind. Skogafoss follows 20 minutes on, then Reynisfjara’s black sand near Vik another 30 minutes past that; Vik itself sits 187km and roughly 2.5 hours from Reykjavik. Never turn your back on the water there; sneaker waves have killed visitors who stood too close. Expect to return 9-10pm in summer light.
Day 4: Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Morning
Snaefellsnes sits 150km (about 93 miles) out, roughly 2-2.5 hours each way. Kirkjufell, the mountain that outshoots every other in Iceland’s photo feeds, anchors the north side of the peninsula.
Afternoon
Arnarstapi’s coastal cliffs, the black sand cove at Djupalonssandur, and the black-painted Budakirkja round out the standard stops. Guided full-day tours run ISK 16,990-18,900pp (~$120-135); this is the one day on this itinerary genuinely better as an overnight than a single push, since half the appeal is the early-morning and late-evening light rather than the 5 hours of driving.
Evening
Head back to Reykjavik, tired but done with the country’s four signature day trips in four days flat.
Is Snaefellsnes Worth a Full Day, or Should You Skip It for More City Time?
Worth the day, and arguably the pick most first itineraries drop when time runs short, which is exactly why it’s worth protecting here. Kirkjufell alone justifies the drive, and the peninsula’s coastline genuinely earns the “Iceland in miniature” label rather than just repeating the Golden Circle in different scenery.
Do You Need a 4x4 for Any of This?
No. Every route above, the Golden Circle, Reykjanes, the South Coast to Vik, and the standard Snaefellsnes loop, runs on paved road year-round. F-roads requiring 4x4 don’t open until roughly mid-June and aren’t part of any stop on this itinerary.
Five to seven days add a proper northern lights attempt and a longer South Coast push to Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, covered in our full day trips guide and the 7 day version .
