Iceland Off the Beaten Path: 6 Day Itinerary

Six days keeps the same spine as our 5 day plan , Golden Circle, Reykjanes, South Coast, Snaefellsnes, a lava field hike, and pushes one day further than most itineraries bother: Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, roughly five hours from Reykjavik, worth the distance once you’ve already committed to a week-length trip.

Book these before you go

Day 1: Golden Circle plus the pool most tours skip

Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, in that order, 230km round trip, 6-8 hours with stops. Detour through Fludir for the Secret Lagoon , from about €24 (roughly $26), built in 1891 and rarely on a big-bus itinerary.

Day 2: Reykjanes, and picking your lagoon

Blue Lagoon Comfort from ISK 11,990 (~$96) on the official site , pre-booked only, or Sky Lagoon in Kopavogur for roughly $100-150 with no peninsula drive. Check safetravel.is that morning.

Day 3: South Coast to Reynisfjara

Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, then Reynisfjara’s black sand near Vik, 187km and roughly 2.5 hours out. Never turn your back on the water there.

Day 4: Snaefellsnes Peninsula

150km out, roughly 2-2.5 hours each way: Kirkjufell, Arnarstapi, Djupalonssandur, Budakirkja. An overnight suits it better than a single push.

Day 5: Reykjanes lava field hike, then northern lights

A 9-hour guided hike over still-warm lava by day, then an aurora attempt after dark, roughly 22:30-01:00, September through April only, never guaranteed on any single night.

Day 6: Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon extension

Morning

This is the day that separates a week-length trip from a long weekend. Jokulsarlon sits roughly five hours from Reykjavik, well past Vik and the South Coast stops already covered on day three, so plan on leaving before sunrise or, better, spend the previous night somewhere along the coast to shorten the push.

Afternoon

Icebergs calved from Breidamerkurjokull glacier drift across the lagoon and wash up on the black sand at Diamond Beach just across the road, genuinely unlike anything on the standard South Coast run. Extended guided tours reaching Jokulsarlon run roughly ISK 25,000-40,000pp (~$175-280), a meaningful step up from a standard South Coast day tour, and worth it specifically for this stretch of coastline.

Evening

Head back toward Reykjavik or, if the drive feels like too much in one day, an overnight near Vik or further east breaks it up considerably better than a single round trip.

Is Jokulsarlon Worth Adding to an Already Long Itinerary?

Yes, if you have six or more days to spend, precisely because it’s the stop shortest itineraries cut first for time. Diamond Beach and the lagoon together offer a genuinely different landscape from the waterfalls and lava fields covered earlier in the week, not a repeat of the South Coast in a different location.

Should This Be a Day Trip or an Overnight?

An overnight near Vik or the south coast, if your schedule allows it. Doing Jokulsarlon and back from Reykjavik in a single day means roughly ten hours of driving alone, on top of time at the lagoon itself; breaking the drive with a night away makes the whole day noticeably less grinding.
