Moscow as a Base: A Weekend Away
This 2 day plan uses Moscow purely as a base: settle in and get oriented on day 1, then spend day 2 on the single Golden Ring escape that actually fits a rushed day, Sergiev Posad’s Trinity Lavra, a 90 minute elektrichka ride each way. Longer versions add Zvenigorod, Arkhangelskoye and a proper Golden Ring overnight, see the 3 day plan or the full week .
Reality check before you book anything: foreign Visa, Mastercard and Amex cards do not work anywhere in Russia (bring cash or a Russian MIR card), most nationalities need a visa, and the US State Department and UK FCDO currently advise against travel to Russia, check your own government’s advisory first. Full detail in the Moscow day trips guide .
Book these before you go
- A Moscow hotel to use as a base , on Ostrovok.ru, since foreign cards will not clear at most Moscow front desks either
- Sergiev Posad elektrichka tickets, bought at the station, information at rzd.ru
| Day | Focus | Travel time from Moscow |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive and settle into Moscow | Based in Moscow |
| Day 2 | Sergiev Posad, Trinity Lavra | 1h10 to 1h30 elektrichka, each way |
Day 1: Arrive and settle in
Fly into Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo or Vnukovo depending on your routing hub (Istanbul, Dubai and Doha are the most common connections from outside Russia). The Aeroexpress train covers all three airports to a central station in 35 to 45 minutes, standard one-way roughly 500 RUB (about $6.50) from Sheremetyevo, but the ticket kiosk wants cash or a Russian MIR card, not a foreign Visa or Mastercard. Check into your base hotel and keep the evening light, this itinerary is about the trips out, our Moscow city guide covers Red Square, the Kremlin and the rest of the city itself in depth.
Day 2: Sergiev Posad, the essential Golden Ring stop
Take the elektrichka from Yaroslavsky Station (departures roughly every 20 to 40 minutes, 1h10 to 1h30 each way, fare roughly 200 to 330 RUB) to Sergiev Posad. The Trinity Lavra of St Sergius is a 10 minute walk from the station, grounds are free, a separate fee covers specific museum collections inside. Dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered, bring a headscarf for church interiors, this is a working monastery, not a pure sightseeing stop. Grab lunch in town before the train back, kitchens near the Lavra fill up around midday.
Is Sergiev Posad worth it on a 2 day trip?
Yes, it is the one Golden Ring stop that fits a short visit without an overnight. It is closer and faster than Vladimir or Suzdal, and it delivers the region’s most historically significant monastery for the cost of a short elektrichka ride and a modest museum fee.
Keep small ruble notes on you for the elektrichka ticket window, it rarely has change for anything larger.
