Practical Tips for Umrah and Hajj

Mecca is closed to non-Muslims, and this is a practical checklist for Muslim travellers preparing for Umrah or Hajj, not general tourist etiquette. Get the items below sorted before you fly; several of them can block you at the airport or the Nusuk portal if you leave them too late.
Before You Book Anything
Every pilgrim needs a permit through Nusuk (nusuk.sa), the official Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah platform. Hajj visas run through a country quota via an approved agent or the Nusuk Hajj portal; there is no independent Hajj route. Umrah can be arranged directly via Nusuk, or via the Saudi tourist e-visa outside Hajj season for eligible nationalities, but you still need a separate Nusuk Umrah permit to actually enter the Grand Mosque. Beware unofficial brokers promising shortcuts; arrange everything through Nusuk or a genuinely approved agent.
The Meningitis Certificate Is Not Optional
A MenACWY meningitis vaccination certificate is a mandatory entry requirement, needed anywhere from 10 days to 3-5 years before arrival depending on the vaccine type; travellers from certain countries also need a polio dose. No certificate means no Hajj visa, so book this appointment as early as your other preparations, not as an afterthought.
Ihram: What to Know Before You Enter It
Ihram is entered at or before the miqat boundary. Men wear two seamless white cloths; women wear modest ordinary clothing, with no special garment required. From that point, restrictions apply: no perfume, no cutting hair or nails, no marital relations, and no hunting or quarrelling, until the rites are completed.
Women Travelling for Umrah or Hajj
Saudi Arabia officially dropped its mahram (male-guardian) requirement for women’s Hajj and Umrah in 2021, and that remains in force. In practice, though, some national authorities and tour operators layer their own conditions on top, commonly requiring women under a certain age to travel within an organised group while allowing more freedom above it. Check both your home country’s rules and Nusuk’s current terms before booking (verify exact age thresholds, as they shift).
Heat and Crowds
Mecca’s summer heat regularly exceeds 45°C, and Hajj itself has seen serious heat-related tolls in recent years. Hydrate constantly, use the free Zamzam and any cooling stations provided, and treat sun exposure as a real risk rather than a discomfort, particularly during the Arafat and Mina days. Crowds at peak times are extreme by any normal standard; follow official crowd-management directions at the Jamarat and Mataf without exception.
A Quick Pre-Departure Checklist
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Nusuk permit confirmed | Required to enter the Grand Mosque at all |
| Meningitis certificate in hand | No certificate, no Hajj visa |
| Passport valid 6+ months | Standard entry requirement |
| Hotel booked near the Haram | See where pilgrims stay |
| Ihram garments packed (men) | Needed before the miqat boundary |
Confirm your 2026 travel dates against current guidance close to departure. Saudi Arabia was affected by the regional Iran war earlier in 2026, with a ceasefire since, but check your government’s advisory and Nusuk’s updates rather than assuming last year’s situation still holds.
