Read this before you book a trek: Jammu & Kashmir is a security-sensitive, disputed region, and the April 2025 attack near Pahalgam plus the India-Pakistan tension since are why the US State Department and UK FCDO currently advise against travel to J&K, the FCDO naming Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg specifically. Check your government’s current advisory before booking any multi-day trek. Every route below needs a permit and a registered guide or operator regardless of the advisory; treat that as non-negotiable given the security context, not just standard trekking practice.
Kashmir has genuine, serious alpine trekking, not a stretch to sell a modest valley walk. Six real hiking areas, from a multi-day classic to shorter meadow walks.
1. The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek
The marquee route: Sonamarg to Naranag, about 68km over 6-7 days, June to September, crossing Gadsar Pass at roughly 4,190m. A serious multi-day trek through a chain of high-altitude lakes, needing permits and a registered guide or operator, not a casual weekend hike.
2. Tarsar Marsar
Shorter than the Great Lakes route: from Aru near Pahalgam, about 45km over 5-7 days, June to October, past twin glacial lakes. Same permit and guide requirements apply.
3. Dachigam National Park
About 22km from Srinagar, shorter guided hikes through habitat for the endangered hangul stag. A permit is needed (verify current process); this is a wildlife park with marked routes, not open-access trekking.
4. Gulmarg’s Khilanmarg Walk
A shorter meadow walk above Gulmarg itself, reachable via the gondola’s first stage, a good half-day option for anyone not ready for a multi-day trek.
5. Yusmarg and Doodhpathri Meadow Walks
Two quieter meadow areas further from the main Gulmarg-Pahalgam-Sonamarg circuit, suited to shorter day walks rather than multi-day treks.
6. Aharbal Falls Valley Walk
A waterfall and valley walk, shorter and less demanding than the two big multi-day treks, reasonable for a half-day out from Srinagar.

Book a multi-day trek only through a registered trekking operator who handles the permits directly; this isn’t a route where showing up with a tent and a map is a realistic plan. See our nature spots guide for the lakes and parks that pair with these routes, and check the current UK FCDO advisory before committing to trek dates months out. Browse Kashmir trekking operators on GetYourGuide for the Great Lakes or Tarsar Marsar routes specifically.
If a full multi-day trek isn’t realistic on this trip, Khilanmarg is the honest substitute: real alpine scenery, a fraction of the commitment.
